“Super-Charged Smoothies” by Sara Corpening Whiteford, Mary Corpening Barber; is written concise and outlined well for each drink. I liked some of the drinks, however, to make them they are very expensive and hard to find ingredients. The drinks cannot be stored for later in the day . I really think you would have better telling your target group to buy your first smoothie book first.

I agree with many other reviewers that there are a lot of potentially difficult to find ingredients in this smoothie recipe book. Living near a Whole foods and Trader Joes, I had no difficulty finding most but do find some of the more so-called exotic ingredients to be pricey for making a smoothie.

I still loved the recipes in the book and found most could be easily altered or made with other ingredients if I didn’t have the proper ones. All the ones I tried were very tasty. I did not try some of the greener or veggie-based smoothies. That’s just not my thing. The Kombucha was fantastic, though and a great new way to use the tea. The recipes are a great catalyst for coming up with your own variations on a super-charged drink.

I love smoothies. When I lived in the Midwest I’d frequent Jamba Juice and now here on the East Coast I have a Robek’s in walking distance of my home. This recipe book, containing over sixty different smoothie concoctions is the third book by Mary and Sara Corpening, and it shows due to the lack of accessible ingrediants to the average consumer as well as the lack of variety.

Many of the smoothies contained in this cookbook feature the same few ingredients over and over again such as pomegranate, Acai, and blueberries, and several actual are almost the same exact recipe save for one or two ingredients. This to me shouldn’t count as a completely separate entry and it felt like they were padding the cookbook to make their required page count.

Another thing that annoyed me is that two chapters of the book are completely devoted to the exact opposite of what smoothies are supposed to be, that is healthy liquids to act as a meal on the go. Instead the Corpening sisters have an entire chapter on caffinated smoothies and then another on alcoholic smoothies. That’s nearly two dozen recipes in this book that will alienate the audience that usually drinks these kind of beverages. It makes you wonder if this writing tandem knows either their target market or actually drink these products.

That being said there are a FEW smoothies I actually enjoyed making and found to be tasty. The downside is that many of these smoothies actually cost more for the raw ingredients, along with the time to make them and a high quality food processor and/or blender, than if I had purchased a smoothie with the same ingredients from one of the smoothie chains I mentioned at the start of this review. That’s kind of sad.

I can’t really recommend this cookbook as it is both impractical and poorly handled. It’s not a bad book - it’s just not one worth purchasing.

I am actually new to making smoothies. Haven’t done it since I was a tween and would just toss a jumble of fruit in the blender and let it rip. I thought this book would give me a good start to making healthy and deliberate smoothies. No doubt that it definitely has that potential - if you can find the ingredients! Each smoothie calls for (what I deem) rare ingredients, so this put a huge damper on the situation.

The book does have many yummy and useful recipes though. There are some to help with specfic health issues etc, a section for kids, some for pregnant women etc. Of course anyone can drink any of the recipes though, so don’t think that the book would be unuseful for you (as long as you can find the ingredients). The problem is that ALOT of the ingredients are really hard to find! You have to go to a specialty store.

Perhaps alot of people who were attracted to this book in the first place already figured on having to shop at one anyway though? Personally, I didn’t expect that. I thought I would be able to pick a recipe and walk into my local grocery store and get everything on the list and go home and whip up some yummy smoothies for the family.. Totally not the case though, unfortunately.

I knocked a star off the rating due to the ingredients being so hard to find. The book has a good number of yummy sounding smoothies for the right person in the right place with access to the ingredients needed. Myself, I am STILL trying to find out where to buy most of the ingredients. Bummer!

Pretty good smoothie book. Has some very creative recipes. I really liked the few “adult” smoothie recipes which would be great to serve for a warm day get together. On the other hand, I was a little disappointed that there weren’t more kid-friiendlier recipes. Basic yogurt and fruit smoothies are staples at my house and I was hoping to find a few more fun ones for the kids. The other minor gripe I have with the book is not with the actual content but, with the book itself. It is a sort of a narrow softcover book that won’t stay open by itself when you put it down. How about a spiral spine that I can lay open to look at while I am getting the ingredients together. One last thing is that there are a lot of ingredients called for that most would have a tough time finding in ones local grocery store. They offer some alternatives but sometimes it seems like you all the subs just made a regular old smoothie. You really have to prepare by shopping in advance. Otherwise, a decent smoothie book.
